A woman punched her ex-boyfriend and threatened him with a knife while two children watched on.

Ruth Amy Northing, 38, pleaded guilty to affray, assault by beating and being drunk in charge of a child when she appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (7 July).

Crown prosecutor Asha Seenauth said the defendant, of Kent End, Ashton Keynes, had an on-off relationship with her ex-boyfriend – the father of her two children.

On 3 April this year, he was staying with Northing. But an argument about his drinking habits escalated into violence and she punched him in the mouth.

Moments later, she picked up a kitchen knife and – while two children were present in the immediate vicinity – chased him. He managed to leave the room a shut the door.

Fearing for his life, he held the door closed as intoxicated Northing repeatedly stabbed it with the blade.

It was undoubtedly distressing for all parties involved in this case”, Ms Seenauth added.

Police officers were called to the scene and found Nothing was found alone with two children, resulting in the charge of being drunk charge of a child under the age of seven.

The court heard that the defendant does not have a criminal record, but suffers from borderline personality disorder (also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder ) and PTSD.

The case was adjourned for an all-options pre-sentence report to be compiled. Northing will return for sentencing on 1 August.
