Woman called nurse C-word whilst being treated at Great Western Hospital

A woman told a nurse to “f**k off” before labelling her a “c**t” whilst she was being treated at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Kate Chapman was taken into the accident and emergency department for medical attention by Wiltshire police officers on 30 May this year.

The 53-year-old, of Downs View, Royal Wootton Bassett not only verbally abused a senior nurse but also damaged a soap dispenser in a public toilet on site.

Appearing before Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (25 August), she pleaded guilty to criminal damage and threatening behaviour.

Crown prosecutor Pauline Lambert said the incident put her in breach of an eight-week suspended sentence order which she received in September 2020 for possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Defence solicitor Stephen Collins said his client suffers from emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD), which “causes her to fly into temporary rages”.

He said Chapman was angry with the nurse because she asked her what she was doing in the toilet, concerned for her welfare.

“She went to use the loo, she had been in there no longer than a minute but the nurse was knocking on the door. She says things she later comes to regret.”

Martin Smith, chair of the bench of magistrates, said: “You were extremely rude to a nurse, and you broke a soap dish.

“We are not going to invoke your suspended sentenced order and send you to prison, but we are extending it for six months.”

He also ordered Chapman to pay £100 compensation to the senior nurse involved.
