Old Sarum Primary School – which is close by – was advised to keep children indoors whilst officers deal with the incident.

More than an hour after being called to the scene, officers arrested a man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and affray.

“Enquiries were conducted and extensive searches were carried out in the local area which led to the arrest of a man shortly before 1.30pm”, a Wiltshire Police spokesperson said.

Adding: “He is currently being taken to custody.

“While these enquiries have been carried out, officers liaised with staff at Old Sarum Primary School due to the proximity of the incident to the school grounds.”
