Two men charged with wounding woman during Swindon burglary

Two men have been charged with wounding a woman during a Swindon burglary.

Martin Coombs, 24, and Jay Stokes, 31, are due to appear at Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (Friday) – and face allegations of aggravated burglary and inflicting previous bodily harm with intent.

Emergency services were called to Verwood Close, Park North, on 29 November after reports of two males entering a flat, ransacking it and stabbing the female occupant – aged in her 30s – according to police.

Coombs, of Somerville Road, and Stokes, of Hallam Moor, were arrested in connection with the incident, questioned by detectives, charged and remanded in police custody.

Due to the nature of the charges, the case will be sent to Swindon Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing in January. Magistrates will only make a decision on the defendants’ bail status.

Following the incident, DS Rob Prout from the burglary unit said: “This brazen offence was committed in broad daylight, leaving the victim requiring hospital treatment.

“Following swift work from officers and reports from members of the public, we have arrested two men on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

“We understand how traumatic burglaries can be – that’s why it is a Force priority and we have dedicated teams to tackle it.”
