Trowbridge man ‘cuddled wife and sliced her wrist’ in alleged murder attempt

A Trowbridge man ‘cuddled wife and sliced her wrist’ in an alleged murder attempt.

66-year-old Andrew Charles Sawyer appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning (Saturday).

Prosecutor Tom Power alleged that the defendant tried to kill his wife, 60-year-old Karen Sawyer, at their home address in Ramsbury Walk on Thursday (16 February).

He claimed that Sawyer “went upstairs to find his wife in bed and gave her a cuddle – he then took her hand and lacerated her right wrist.”

Mr Power alleged that the incident was a “planned event” and said the defendant “knew what knife he was going to use” ahead of the attack.

The court heard that his wife was able to escape and the police were alerted. Mr Power added that “she remains alive at this time”.

Richard Willams, defending, said his client has had a “happy marriage for many many years” and has recently been “suffering from depression triggered by quite a large debt”.

Entering no pleas to a charge of attempted murder, Sawyer was remanded into custody. He will next appear at Winchester Crown Court on 16 March for a plea hearing.

Wiltshire Police guarded the house following the incident, which happened in the early hours of the morning, and forensics didn’t leave the crime scene until late on Thursday night.
