Trowbridge armed siege ends after several hours – as police detain man

An armed siege has ended with a man being detained, Wiltshire Police has confirmed.

Emergency services were initially called to an address in Glebe Road, Trowbridge, earlier this afternoon (Thursday 25 August) following a concern for the welfare of a man inside.

The man reportedly threatened to set himself and the house on fire, and made other threats of violence towards 999 crews in attendance.

His behaviour resulted in a huge emergency services presence, including four Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) units from South Western Ambulance Service’s hub in Bristol.

At least ten firearms officers were in attendance at the height of the incident – with approximately six of them arriving in a public support vehicle (police minibus) shortly after 8pm.

Two specially-trained negotiators were also at the scene, attempting to engage with the man.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service had at least two fire engines on site for the duration of the incident due to the reported threats made by the man.

By 9pm, the incident was resolved and the man was detained, though it’s not yet clear if the man is being held under the Mental Health Act or arrested for alleged offences.

In an earlier statement, Wiltshire Police said: “Our officers are currently at the scene of an ongoing incident at a property in Glebe Road, Trowbridge.

“This relates to concerns for the safety of a man inside a property who we are currently engaging with. There is no wider threat to members of the local community.

“We have closed Glebe Road as a precaution and we are requesting that members of the public should avoid the area to allow emergency services to resolve the incident.”
