Tesco has been slammed by a Chippenham home delivery customer after receiving some of her order packed ‘one item per bag’ – and she paid just over 1p a bag.
Jenna, who lives on Hungerdown Lane, ordered just over £90 worth of shopping on Friday 16 December, and claims when it arrived, it came in 29 separate carrier bags.
When she purchased the shopping online, Tesco charged just 40p for her bags, meaning she paid just over 1p per carrier bag – way below the 5p legal charge.
Talking to Wiltshire 999s, Jenna said: “I was so unimpressed. Why do I need single items packed separately? It’s an absolute waste of plastic.
“I care about the environment and plastic bags blight the coastline and countryside. Luckily, I will resue them, but not everybody will – many will just go to landfill.
“What’s the point in a bag charge if supermarkets don’t have to abide by the law?”
Items that were packed alone in one bag each included a 120g box of chocolates, a package of wafers, a small bottle of orange juice and a pack of shortcake biscuits.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have used a few too many bags to pack this customer’s shopping and our local store will take a little extra care packing orders in future.”
