The casualty was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol by Wiltshire Air Ambulance – where he is receiving urgent care.

The police helicopter was called in to assist officers on the ground, circling Old Town before hovering over Pinehurst, Penhill and Kingsdown.

Detectives are present on the fields, where a large crime scene was put in place. The area is being guarded by numerous uniformed PCs and PCSOs.

George Scarrott and Sons’ Family Fun Fair was on at the time of the stabbing, but management closed it down as soon as they were aware of events unfolding across the field. There’s nothing to suggest the incident is connected with the fair.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Officers were called to Meadowcroft Fields in Upper Stratton shortly after 8pm this evening following reports of a disorder involving a group of teenagers.

“The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was treated on scene and then taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by air ambulance.

“Extensive area searches are currently ongoing and there is a heightened police presence in the area while enquiries are carried out.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101 and quote log number 344 of June 8. Alternatively, call CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
