Teenager, 14, dies after Swindon hit-and-run as woman arrested

A Swindon teenager has tragically died after a hit-and-run as he made his way to school.

The 14-year-old was struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing in Akers Way, at the junction for Nova Hreod School, at around 8.20am yesterday (Friday 25 November).

The vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene. A number of witnesses immediately rushed to provide first aid ahead of the arrival of emergency services.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance landed near the incident, soon after airlifting the casualty to the Regional Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

Wiltshire Police has confirmed that despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the boy was pronounced dead a few hours later. His next of kin have been informed.

Police launched a manhunt following the hit-and-run, later locating a dark-coloured Jeep Compass parked in a residential road – about a four-mile drive from the scene.

It’s not yet clear how the vehicle, which had a partially smashed windscreen and some front nearside damage, came to be discovered or if it was definitely the car involved.

A specially-trained collision investigator forensically examined and photographed the car before it was loaded onto a recovery vehicle and seized as part of the ongoing probe.

A 50-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She has since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.

Wiltshire Police is continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the teenager at this incredibly difficult time, and we would ask that their privacy is respected.

“We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the tragic incident which took place at about 8.20am on Akers Way when the boy was hit by a car which failed to stop at the scene.
