Swindon teen ‘didn’t know he needed a licence’ to drive ‘powerful’ car

A teen claimed he ‘didn’t know he needed a licence’ after being caught at the wheel of a ‘powerful’ car.

Adam Khan, 19, was stopped driving after police noticed a stench of cannabis coming from the vehicle as it travelled along Peglars Way in Wichelstowe.

During the traffic stop on the Mercedes C200 in December 2022, officers discovered that the defendant did not have a license and was not insured.

When all four occupants of the car were searched, three grams of cannabis was discovered, Swindon Magistrates’ Court heard on 7 July.

Khan pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and possession of cannabis.

Duty solicitor Liz Highams said her client believed that his mother had purchased insurance on his behalf and that he was not required to have a driver’s licence because of this.

The chair of the bench, Rachel Gowshall, told Khan that she did not believe his story.

Adding that the offences were concerning because the vehicle is particularly powerful and there were other passengers in the car.

Khan, of Broad Street, received an overall fine of £160 and three points on his licence if and when he obtains it.
