At least one man was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and has been taken to Gablecross custody for questioning.

Manchester Road was cordoned off for a short time along with Alfred Street, but reopened at around 3.45pm.

Alfred Street remains closed as three members of crime scene staff comb the area for evidence. More than a dozen marker cones can be spotted within the cordon.

The road is expected to remain closed until late tonight.

In an earlier statement, Inspector Steve Love said: “We do not believe this to be a random attack although it is very early stages of our investigation.

”Residents can expect to see a heightened police presence in the area while enquiries are carried out this afternoon and over the coming days. If you have any concerns, please speak to an officer.”
