Swindon man, 34, who handed girl ‘love letter’ avoids prison sentence

A Swindon man who handed a girl a ‘love letter’ has avoided a prison sentence.

Shayne Withers pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and appeared at Swindon Crown Court for sentencing on 18 August.

At a previous hearing, prosecutor Asha Seenauth said the 34-year-old gave a young girl a letter in March this year – in which he disclosed his love for her.

He was also charged with harassing the youngster, but it was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in light of his admissions to the sexual offence.

The defendant, of Welcome Avenue, was handed a two-year community order with the requirement to complete 40 rehabilitation activity days.

Withers must register as a sex offender for a period of five years.
