Swindon man assaulted female police officer after being tasered at incident

A Swindon man assaulted an female police officer after being tasered at an incident.

PC Julie Mason, who has been with Wiltshire Police for nearly 20 years, was struck to her breastbone when Bradley Murray, 29, kicked the police van door into her.

It happened when he was arrested for unrelated offences – for which he remains under investigation – at Abbey Meads Village Centre on 23 October this year.

At Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (30 November), the defendant, of Gable Close, Swindon, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker.

Crown prosecutor Kate Prince said Murray had to be tasered whilst officers were attempting to detain him at an unspecified incident.

He was eventually – despite much resistance – put into the police van’s cell.

But moments later he kicked out at the cell door. The heavy metal door struck PC Mason in the breastbone and pushed her backwards. There were no lasting injuries.

The court heard Murray has previous offences on his record, including a public order offence in 2018 and failing to comply with a community order in 2019.

Defending, Mark Glendenning said his client had been arrested for other matters which are still under investigation. However, Murray claims he was the victim in the matter.

He was unhappy with how police were treating him and did not believe he should have been arrested.

He accepts that he kicked the van door, which then swung open and hit the officer – but claims he did not intend to hurt the officer.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 70 hours of unpaid work. Murray must also pay £100 compensation to PC Mason.
