Swindon council worker tests positive for COVID-19 with other cases suspected

A member of Swindon Borough Council’s recycling team tested positive for coronavirus, with two other colleagues currently awaiting their results at home.

The staff member who received a diagnosis at the end of last week works at the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Waterside on Cheney Manor Industrial Estate and is now self-isolating.

Another worker – part of the same council department – developed symptoms this week and are also at home self-isolating whilst they await their COVID-19 results. A third employee is self-isolating due to a family member testing positive.

The council say they are following the guidance provided by the central government to the letter.

The town has seen the biggest increase in cases across the south of the country. In the last week, 70 people tested positive, compared to 22 the previous week.

A spokesperson for Swindon Borough Council said: “Towards the end of last week a single member of staff based at Waterside tested positive for COVID-19 and immediate testing took place of all staff who may have been affected, with no further positive tests.

“Since then only one other member of staff, from a different area of the site, has had to isolate with suspected symptoms. As a local authority, we follow all the proper guidance and procedures to help keep staff and residents safe, and currently there are no concerns about cases at Waterside.”
