A suspected drink driver has been arrested following a crash on the A419.

Emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway between Blunsdon and Cricklade at around 11.30pm last night (2 December).

Five fire engines could be seen lining the road as firefighters worked to free two casualties from a car – a light-coloured Peugeot – alongside paramedics.

A black Volkswagen Polo involved in the crash left the road and ended up embedded in a hedge. The male driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Wiltshire Police say the motorist was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken to Gablecross custody.

The road was closed for around three hours while 999 crews worked at the scene.

“Three crews attended, from Stratton, Swindon and Cricklade, together with a heavy rescue unit from Gloucester, although that wasn’t needed and left within minutes of arrival”, a spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Adding: “Firefighters worked with ambulance colleagues to free two casualties from a car, and our stop was at 1.23am.”
