Suspect ‘swaps machete for plastic fork’ after gunpoint arrest in Swindon

A robbery suspect ‘swapped a machete for a plastic fork’ being arrested at gunpoint.

Firearms officers swooped on a 22-year-old male in Crombey Street, Swindon town centre, at around 1.45pm on Friday afternoon (31 March).

Witnesses saw two men detained at gunpoint in the broad-daylight stop by armed police, with a machete uncovered when one of the men was searched.

He was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of a bladed article; he is believed to be linked to a spate of armed robberies in the area.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police Specialist Operations said: “This serious weapon was located during searches, and is now off our streets! It’s been swapped for a plastic spork in custody!”
