Suspect interviewed after fatal pony cart crash in Chippenham – investigation continues

A man has been interviewed under caution after a fatal pony cart crash in Chippenham.

Police rushed to the incident in Methuen Park shortly before 2pm on 23 July last year, following reports of the dead animal in the road and damage to a parked Range Rover.

A two-wheeled cart, towed by a pony, collided with the parked car and died at the scene.

CCTV footage seen by Wiltshire 999s showed two people riding in the cart moments before the impact – one is believed to be an adult and the other a child.

Despite the pony suffering horrific injuries and passing away almost immediately, the pair were spotted fleeing the area on foot.

Whilst no arrests have been made, one man has been interviewed under caution. A decision has not been made whether or not to charge the suspect, who is aged in his 30s.

Wiltshire Police says it wants to “provide the public with reassurance that this incident is still being actively investigated”.

The force added that it is currently “liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service” about how to move forward, confirming that witnesses and experts have provided statements in relation to the incident.

Anyone with information, who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to call 101, quoting crime reference 54210071435.
