Storm Ciarán: Swindon school forced to close early over river risk

A Swindon school has been forced to close early as a result of Storm Ciarán.

Nova Hreod Academy is to shut at 1.35pm today (Thursday) over concerns about a nearby river.

The River Ray burst its banks early, and with the water level rising, pupils are being sent home.

In a letter to parents, a school spokesperson said that the close comes after an assessment of the river at the bottom of the school hill, coupled with more severe weather incoming.

“Students who are walking home or being collected nearby will be dismissed at 13.25. Everyone else will be dismissed at 13.35.

“If collecting your child, please do not drive onto the school site and arrange to collect them somewhere nearby.

“Students will be allowed to use their phones to contact you from 13.25 if they need to do so.
