A popular route in Wiltshire has been closed after it suffered significant road damage.
An emergency closure was put in place on the B4069 between Lyneham and Dauntsey Lock this afternoon (17 February).
Roadworks were already underway, with two-way traffic lights, prior to today’s closure. However, due to continued disturbance of the road surface, it has been shut completely.
The section of road affectef is approximately 150 metres northeast of Motorholics car showroom, at Lyneham Banks.
The road surface has risen about three feet and split in places, with large cracks. the cause is understood to be due to water running beneath the surface and heavy vehicles — some heavier than legally allowed on road — using the route.
It is not clear how long the road will be closed, but it’s likely to be for the foreseeable future.
Businesses located in the Lyneham Banks area can be accessed as usual.
The villages of Bradenstoke and Grittenham are likely to notice an increase in traffic. Sodom Lane is also likely to be used as an unofficial diversion route.
