‘Quick action’ from firefighters prevents devastating blaze at The Churchill

The ‘quick action’ of firefighters has prevented a devastating blaze at a pub in Wiltshire.

A blaze broke out at The Churchill in Royal Wootton Bassett – with flames bursting through the roof – at around 8.10pm yesterday evening (Thursday 13 April).

A fire crew from Westlea (Swindon) were first at the scene and prevented it from spreading from a storage room. They were soon after backed up by a local crew and another from Stratton (Swindon).

All staff and customers were evacuated safely, with workers praised for their response to the incident.

Three fire engines and an aerial ladder appliance were in attendance at the height of the incident – but once the flames were out, the response was scaled back.

“Quick action from the first arriving crew prevented a more serious incident”, a fire spokesperson said.
