Prisoner attempts to escape from prison van as officers attacked

A prisoner has attempted to escape from a prison van this morning (Tuesday).

Around a dozen police officers responded to an urgent assistance call from Serco security officers on White Hart Roundabout in Swindon at around 9.45am.

A man, aged in his 20s, was being transported to a magistrates’ court when he tried to injury himself in the van just half a mile from Gablecross Police Station.

The security officers intervened and were subsequently assaulted. When police officers arrived, two of them were also attacked.

The incident saw a signficiant police response, with at least ten police cars surrounding the prison van at the junction for Oxford Road – which is closed due to a house fire.

Wiltshire Police said that the prisoner has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and attempting to escape lawful custody

He has since been returned to Gablecross custody for questioning.
