Police thank witnesses who detained knifeman in Swindon town centre

Wiltshire Police has thanked witnesses who detained a knifeman in Swindon town centre.

Officers rushed to The Parade, close to Superdrug and Wilko, at around 2pm this afternoon (Good Friday) following reports of a male armed with a bladed weapon.

Eyewitnesses claim the suspect was violent and confrontational – but members of the public stepped in to disarm and detain him.

In a statement, the force wrote: “He was detained by members of the public before our officers arrived on the scene.

“A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of a class B drug.

“We would like to thank the bravery and quick thinking of those members of the public who stepped in to detain the suspect.”
