Police support lollipop lady after she’s verbally abused and ignored

Police have stepped up patrols near a zebra crossing in Trowbridge after a lollipop lady was reportedly verbally abused and often ignored by some drivers.

PCSOs Hannis and Bryant were stationed outside Newtown Primary School this morning to monitor how motorists responded to directions to stop by the ‘school crossing patrol’.

A spokesperson for Trowbridge Police said: “We have also received many reports of drivers using their phones so we were keeping an eye out for this too.

“We are happy to say that that while we were present all was in order.

“Patrols will continue to be conducted in the area and we would also like to remind drivers that using a mobile phone while driving even when in stationary traffic isn’t acceptable and fixed penalty notices will be issued to drivers who are found using their phones while driving.”

Concerns were also raised on community Facebook page Spotted in Trowbridge today.

An anonymous poster commented that “She is risking her life every day to cross the children. Give her a little bit of gratitude and make her day less stressful. Slow down when she gets ready to step out.”

Praising the lollipop lady, they added “I have witnessed so many people abusing that crossing. She is there doing her job and what a bloody good job she is doing as well!”
