Police remove post saying children aren’t allowed to wave at truckers on bridge

A Facebook post requesting that people stop waving at truckers from a bridge in south Wiltshire was removed by police this afternoon after it received a negative response.

The post on the Mere Police page told locals that they would be moved on from the foot bridges over the A303 Mere Bypass if they were caught loitering there and waving a passing lorries.

It’s understood that police had received a complaint about truckers honking their horns at youngsters – some as young as six years old – as they travelled through the Mere area over the past few days. The loud noises are said to have upset some nearby residents.

The post stated: “We have had a plea from residents of the houses near the A303 in Mere.

“Please would people not encourage lorry drivers to sound their horns by waving at drivers from the A303 over bridge. If you are home and stuck indoors, near to the A303, it is causing issues for those people obeying the COVID 19 rules.

“We will be patrolling the bridge to see if anyone is hanging about there when they should not be.”

Dozens of people left a comment on the post, most concerned that children would be upset by the fact they could no longer get a little bit of joy whilst out with their parents for exercise.

The original Facebook post was seen by Wiltshire 999s at around midday today, but at 4.30pm it had been removed following the backlash.
