Police officer assaulted as ARMED ROBBER is detained by brave Tesco staff and shoppers

An armed man who attempted to steal money from the tills at a Tesco Express store in Swindon yesterday remains in custody at Gablecross Police Station today.

The 27-year-old, carrying a screwdriver and dirty needles, was detained by three members of staff and three members of the public on Bank Holiday Monday.

It happened in the Tesco store in Freshbrook, in broad daylight, at around 5.30pm.

The police officer who was called to the incident was assaulted by the suspect during his arrest.

The man was arrested on suspicion of burglary, public order offences, possession of a bladed article, possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and assaulting a police officer.
