Large police presence and cordons as two women assaulted in central Swindon

A central Swindon road has been closed after two women were assaulted, police have confirmed.

Alexandra Road, off Station Road, has been closed by police in all directions following the serious incident at around 7.30pm (17 February).

A police dog unit is at the incident and police officers are guarding the street, with nearby alleyways cordoned off.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called at about 7pm this evening to reports of two women being physically assaulted in Station Road, Swindon.

“We closed Alexandra Road to allow a dog unit to search the area of the incident.

“This is an ongoing incident and we will provide further updates where appropriate.”

The women are not believed to have suffered any significant injuries in the attack.

In an earlier statement, sparking concern and confusion with locals, the force said: “Following an incident just over an hour ago, it has been necessary to close the full length of Alexandra Road in New Town to all vehicles and pedestrians.

“Residents will see a large police presence in this area whilst enquiries at the scene are ongoing.

“Please avoid the area if possible and adhere to the cordons in place.”
