Police chase through Chippenham ends in crash — driver flees the scene

A police chase through Chippenham this afternoon left some local residents fearing for their lives.

Around a dozen police vehicles were involved in the pursuit through the town at 1.30pm today.

A number of locals were forced to dive out of the way of the grey Audi as it sped off from officers at high speed along Malmesbury Road, driving on the wrong side of the road and at oncoming traffic.

One resident told Wiltshire 999s he ‘saw his life flash before him’ as the sports car drove at him head-on, and forced him to take evasive action to avoid a crash.

The dramatic chase came to an end near the Travelodge on Foundry Lane when the car collided with metal fencing before coming to rest on a construction site.

The driver of the vehicle is understood to have fled the scene on foot, evading capture by running on to the railway tracks. It is not clear whether he was eventually arrested.

The reason the suspect fled isn’t yet confirmed, but a witness told Wiltshire 999s that officers told them the car was stolen.

We’ve approached Wiltshire Police for comment.
