Firefighters tackled a boat blaze on the canal in Devizes on Saturday (25 November).

Emergency services raced to reports of a significant fire on the Kennet and Avon Canal, between London Road and Dowse Road, shortly before 7pm.

On arrival, a 60-foot barge was found to be engulfed in flames and firefighting began – and then continued into the night.

Wiltshire Police said they are “not aware of any casualties” and there are “there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances” surrounding the incident.

The boat was completely destroyed by fire and partially submerged.

Officers are expected to maintain a cordon in the area as emergency services work at the scene. The towpath may remain shut this morning (Sunday).

London Road was closed between Brickley Lane and Quakers Road but it has since reopened.
