PCSO awarded compensation after Westbury football fan threw plastic cup at him

A man who assaulted a PCSO by throwing a cup of beer at him during a grassroots football game has been fined £200.

On the afternoon of Sunday 13 June, two PCSOs were conducting routine licence checks at Westbury Football Club when they became the target of a group of people at the ground.

They shouted “get out” at the pair, before Loui Gane picked up a plastic cup of beer and threw it in their direction, hitting one of them on the back.

The 22-year-old, of Bitham Mill Courtyard, was charged with one count of assaulting an emergency worker and initially failed to appear at court.

However, a warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was subsequently arrested and appeared at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court yesterday (13 October).

Gane pleaded guilty and was fined £266, ordered to pay £100 compensation to the PCSO and ordered to pay further court costs and surcharges.

Sergeant Kevin Harmsworth, from the Warminster Area Community Policing Team, said: “Nobody should come to work expecting to be insulted or assaulted, and it is completely unacceptable that this PCSO was targeted in this way.

“We will continue to be robust in arresting those who assault emergency workers, to ensure they face justice and are dealt with by the courts.”
