Passing children call 999 as firefighters carry out crane rescue exercise in Trowbridge

A group of children are being blamed for a malicious 999 call today, prompting an unnecessary police response as firefighters carried out a crane rescue exercise.

A team of Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were working to rescue one of their own from a 30 metre high crane on Seymour Road in Trowbridge at the time.

Despite seeing a large fire service presence on the building site, the group of children decided to call 999 to report someone on the crane.

Three nearby police units were sent to the scene on blue lights.

A Trowbridge Fire Station spokesperson said: “Passing kids watched our exercise, saw the appliance below and still phoned in a malicious call prompting this response from Wiltshire Police. I’m sure your parents are so proud.”
