Passenger of van trapped in cab after colliding with lorry near Swindon

Firefighters have freed a casualty from the passenger seat of a van after it collided with a lorry near Swindon this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene in A346 Marlborough Road, near the junction with Butts Road, Chiseldon, at around 6pm.

A white Mercedes Sprinter and a Scania lorry (HGV) were involved in the serious crash.

The male passenger of the van was physically trapped within the cab of the vehicle. Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to release the casualty into the care of paramedics.

The driver of the lorry is being treated by paramedics for shock.

Five fire crews, from Swindon, Stratton (two), Westlea and Trowbridge, were initially sent to the scene. Westlea and Trowbridge were stood down en-route and the extrication was carried out by Swindon and Stratton crews.

The main road is closed between Junction 15 and New Road (Esso service station). It’s likely to remain closed until around 8pm.
