Despite the best efforts of 999 crews, the man – aged in his 60s from Chippenham – was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed.

It appears the impact occurred when the Skoda driver pulled into the path of the motorcycle.

However, Wiltshire Police has launched a forensic collision investigation in order to establish the full facts – information what won’t be available until the inquest, or during court proceedings.

The driver of the Skoda remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The road is closed between Lackham and Beanacre – and is expected to stay shut into this afternoon and potentially the evening.

A spokesperson for the force said: “His next of kin has been informed and are being supported by a specialist trained family liaison officer.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this extremely difficult time.”

They added: “The road has been closed between Lackham roundabout and Beanacre.

“Due to the serious nature of the incident, the road is likely to remain closed for approximately six to eight hours while emergency services carry out recovery and investigative work at the scene.

“Drivers are urged to seek an alternative route.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage which could assist should call 101 and quote log number 27 of today.”
