Mother and child, 3, rushed to hospital after being rescued from canal in Newbury

A mother and her three-year-old child have been rescued from a canal in Newbury.

Emergency services, including two air ambulances, were tasked to the serious incident at Ash Bridge near the A339 at around 2pm this afternoon.

The National Police Air Service helicopter from Oxford was deployed to the scene and carried out a lengthy search.

Both casualties have been rushed to hospital after being recovered from the water. Their conditions are unknown at this stage.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “Officers and other emergency services attended. Both the woman and child have been recovered from the water and are being taken to hospital for treatment at this time.

“Officers remain on the scene and members of the public are asked to avoid the area.

“If anyone has any concerns or information which they think could help our investigation into this incident, please call us on 101, quoting reference number INC-20210313-1050.”
