Searches of the water were carried out and during the afternoon, specially-trained water rescue firefighters recovered the man’s body.

Romanian national Sebastian had lived in the Chippenham area for some years and was well-liked. Since moving to the town, he’d worked in Sainsbury’s and at The Car Spa.

Sebastian had reportedly contacted his partner, sending her photographs of him swimming in the river on Saturday evening. Bottles of alcohol were found close to his possessions.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Police were called to Monkton Park yesterday (19/6) shortly before 10am following concerns for the welfare of a man in his 40s.

“Sadly, a body was located in the river a short time later. We do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

“A file will be prepared on behalf of H M Coroner for Wiltshire.”
