The driver, an 18-year-old man, sustained what police describe as “potentially life-changing injuries”.

The smash happened near the Welcome to Lyneham sign

He was treated by Wiltshire Air Ambulance medics at the scene and taken to hospital by land ambulance a short time later.

The other occupants of the vehicle are not believed to have suffered any notable injuries.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it sent two crews from Royal Wootton Bassett and Calne to the serious road traffic collision.

Firefighters “cut free one male casualty” and were in attendance for around an hour.

The road was closed in both directions until around 3am whilst investigation and recovery work was undertaken.
