Man who saved drowning woman, 71, from Wiltshire canal sought

The family of a woman who nearly drowned after falling into a Wiltshire canal last weekend are looking for the selfless man who jumped in and saved her life.

UPDATE: The man has been found, and the family are in touch.

At around 2pm on Sunday 5 March, 71-year-old Irene from Cheshire, fell into the Kennet and Avon near bridge 171 near Sainsbury’s in Bradford-on-Avon.

She lost consciousness and swallowed a lot of canal water.

On noticing, a man who was with his two sons at the time, jumped into the canal without any hesitation and saved Irene from drowning. After three days in hospital in Bath, she’s now recovering back at home.

Her family want to thank the man that man who saved her life, as during the panic of the shocking situation, a thank you wasn’t exchanged.

Irene’s daughter Helly told Wiltshire 999s: “If it hadn’t been for the mystery man, my mum wouldn’t be here today. We would like to thank him properly.”
