Man to be sentenced for sexually assaulting police officer on Valentine’s Day

A Swindon man faces jail for sexually assaulting a serving police officer.

Donovan Yon, 42, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning having changed his plea to guilty on the day of his trial earlier this year.

The defendant, of St Paul’s Street, Gorse Hill, admitted grabbing at the crotch of an on-duty police officer whilst at Great Western Hospital on Valentine’s Day last year.

The officer was trying to get Yon help following an arrest for drink driving, but whilst in the busy emergency department, he grabbed the genitals of the officer in front of members of the public and her colleagues.

He was convicted of drink driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and disorderly behaviour in October 2020.

Deeming the offence too serious for the magistrates’ court to deal with, district judge Joanna Dickens bailed the defendant to attend Swindon Crown Court for sentencing in June.

The officer involved cannot be named for legal reasons. Victims of sexual crimes are entitled to life-long anonymity, meaning it is a criminal offence to name them.
