Man who ‘jumped onto tracks’ struck by train at Swindon railway station

A man’s been struck by a train at Swindon railway station this afternoon (Monday).

There was a large police and ambulance service presence at the scene shortly after 1pm, following reports of the serious incident involving a person on the line.

However, on arrival, 999 crews found the man – who reportedly jumped onto the tracks – had sustained only minor injuries on impact with a slow-moving train.

The train involved, the Great Western Railway service from Cheltenham to London, remained on Platform 1 until shortly after 2pm – running about 70 minutes late.

The railway station was open and running as usual shortly afterwards.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police confirmed that the man “is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries”.

The British Transport Police said the casualty was “taken to a place of safety”, which indicates the incident was mental-health related.

The National Police Air Service helicopter from Bristol circled the area for a short time, but it’s not clear if its presence was linked to the incident.
