Police respond as man assaulted while travellers ‘invade’ Highworth recreation ground

A man was assaulted while travellers ‘invaded’ a recreation ground in Highworth.

Police officers were called to The Elms Recreation Ground, off Cricklade Road, at around 9.20pm last night (Monday, 6 June) following reports of the incident.

A council worker was reportedly assaulted whilst attempting to close the gate or fence as the travellers made their way onto the field. It’s not clear whether he was injured.

At least eight caravans and nine associated vehicles could be seen at the location this morning (7 June).

A photograph captured by a local resident showed a damaged fence, which is alleged to have been caused by the group as they set up camp on the site.

In a statement, Highworth Town Juniors Football Club said it was “disappointed” about the incursion – which comes just eleven months after the last.

“It’s nearly a year to the day since they were last here and despite the efforts of the town clerk to put preventative measures in place Swindon Borough Council have failed to assist”, a spokesperson said.

Wiltshire Police confirmed it was called to reports of the traveller incursion and an assault.

The force said it is “monitoring the situation”, and an investigation is ongoing.
