M4 closed near Chippenham after pedestrian hit by car in serious crash

A forensic collision investigation is ongoing this morning

The M4 is closed westbound near Chippenham following a serious road traffic collision.

Emergency services are thought to have been called to the scene, in the area of Leigh Delemare services, at around 1am this morning (Monday).

National Highways confirmed that a pedestrian was hit by a car. Their condition us unknown at this time.

The motorway between Junction 17 (Chippenham) and Junction 18 (Bath) has been closed westbound. The eastbound carriageway remains open to motorists.

Forensic collision investigation work is ongoing at the scene and is expected to continue until this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Nation Highways said: “The M4 in Wiltshire is closed westbound between J17 (Chippenham) and J18 (for Bath) due to a serious collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

“Wiltshire Police are among the emergency services in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management.

“Due to the nature of this incident, it’s anticipated that the road will be closed for a considerable length of time.”
