M4 crash: Car overturns and bursts into fireball as air ambulance lands

The M4 near Chippenham has been closed after a car overturned and burst into a fireball.

Emergency services rushed to the dramatic incident just before the slip-road for Junction 17 eastbound at around 10pm this evening (Sunday).

Multiple vehicles were involved in the serious collision – with one flipping onto its roof and catching fire.

Several members of the public reportedly managed to free a casualty from the burning vehicle ahead of the emergency services’ arrival.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance landed on the motorway as as the charity’s critical care medics rushed to provide emergency care to the person.

The casualty was taken to hospital by land ambulance. They aren’t believed to have sustained life-changing or life-threatening injuries.

A significant number of 999 resources are in attendance, including several fire engines, several ambulances and around ten police vehicles.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Emergency services are currently in attendance at a serious collision on the M4 near to Leigh Delamere services.

“As a result, a full closure is in place on the M4 between junctions 17 and 18 while the incident is dealt with and to enable the air ambulance to land on the carriageway.

“The closure is likely to be in place for some time.”
