Lorry overturns in serious crash on M4 as road closed both directions

A lorry has overturned in a serious crash on the M4 – reportedly crushing a car.

Emergency services were called to the road traffic collision on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 18 (Bath) and 17 (Chippenham) at around 9.30am today (Friday).

It’s believed a heavy goods vehicle and at least four cars – including a Mini and a Tesla – were involved. It appears a National Highways traffic officer vehicle was also involved.

At least even fire appliances, including a heavy rescue unit, from the Avon Fire and Rescue Service and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are on scene.

In attendance are also at least four ambulances, specialist Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) ambulance crews and a Great Western Air Ambulance rapid response vehicle.

The motorway is currently closed in both directions. The eastbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for most of the day. Westbound could reopen later this morning.

At 11.30am, National Highways officers started to released motorists stuck in the closure via the westbound carriageway — after removing the central reservation barrier.
