People told to keep dogs out of Swindon lake after potentially deadly algae found

Visitors to a country park in Swindon are being told to keep their dogs out of the water.

It comes after potentially deadly algae was found in the lake at Lydiard Park in recent weeks.

In a post on social media, one local resident claimed that rangers had erected signage at the water’s edge – warning people about halmful blue green algae and advising them to keep out.

However, Swindon Borough Council said the presense of the deadly growth has not yet been confirmed, however, an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson told Wiltshire 999s: “The algae has been reported to us and we are taking steps to investigate by contacting the Environmental Agency.

“Once that investigation is complete, if the algae is found, we will display official notices by the lake informing visitors of the situation.

“Until then, we would advise everyone visiting the park to keep an eye on their dogs as a precaution.”
