Huge plumes of smoke seen as fire crews race to battle Swindon chip shop blaze

Huge plumes of smoke were seen in the skies above East Swindon this afternoon following a fire at a chip shop.

Three fire crews and an aerial platform appliance raced to Eldene Chinese Takeaway scene off Eldene Drive — next to Morrisons — at around 5pm.

Fire officer Phil Peaple told Wiltshire 999s that it started within the deep fat fryer exhaust trunking, and was out as soon as the vents were closed and the fire was starved of oxygen.

Whilst the blaze appeared dramatic in photographs of the smoke shared on social media, no firefighting action was required and there was only a small amount of damage to property.

Staff within the takeaway, which was open at the time, vacated the building immediately and were uninjured.
