Firefighters tasked after ‘public attempt to rescue swan’ on icy lake

Firefighters have rescued a swan stuck on an icy lake in a village near Swindon.

Two technical rescue teams were tasked after members of the public attempted to go out on the ice themselves, according to Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS).

At the incident in Latton, near Swindon, yesterday (Thursday, 18 January) specialist firefighters from Stratton Fire Station deployed a boat to reach the bird – before handing it over to the RSPCA.

A spokesperson for DWFRS said: “This afternoon we were called to the lake in Latton, Swindon after receiving a call regarding concerns for a juvenile swan stuck on the ice.

“Due to members of the public attempting to go out onto the ice to help the bird, we mobilised two technical rescue teams from Stratton to assist.

“Crews used an inflatable sled to reach the bird and handed over to the RSPCA (England & Wales) who were also called.

“If you see an animal or person in trouble on ice, please please DO NOT attempt to rescue them yourself, call 999 and wait for help.”
