Firefighters tackle blaze at derelict Unicorn restaurant in Melksham

Firefighters have tackled a blaze at The Unicorn restaurant in Melksham.

The now-derelict building in Old Broughton Road erupted into flames shortly before 3pm this afternoon (Tuesday).

Police swift closed the A3102 between Farmers Roundabout and Bath Road as emergency services attended the scene.

Two fire crews, from Trowbridge, battled the blaze; two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put it out using a hose reel jet.

In March, a cannabis factory was discovered in the building and an investigation was launched.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Bath Road, Melksham at 2:57pm today.

“Two fire engines from Trowbridge were mobilised and on arrival found a fire within the kitchen area on the ground floor.

“Two breathing apparatus wearers used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. The stop message came in at 3:49pm.”

The road has since reopened to motorists.
