A Bristol family who attempted to travel 300 miles to visit a relative were stopped and fined by police when they were spotted shortly after passing through Wiltshire.
The car was pulled over on the M4 near Reading on Saturday evening, 18 April, after the driver was seen hogging the middle lane.
Rather than speaking to their relative via video or on the phone, the family thought it was acceptable to make their way to London for a face-to-face visit despite a non-essential travel ban in place during the coronavirus pandemic.
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “We issued four fines to the occupants of the car, for breaching Coronavirus restrictions.
The driver was also middle lane hogging and had no insurance. He was reported for these offences.
“If the car had been involved in an accident this could have put further strain on the NHS and other emergency services.
“Please don’t make unnecessary journeys so we can protect the NHS and stop the spread of Coronavirus.
“Thank you to the majority of you who are staying at home and saving lives.”
