Family escape Swindon house fire thanks to working smoke alarms

A family have escaped a Swindon house fire thanks to working smoke alarms.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) were called to the blaze in Longworth Drive, Oakhurst, at about 11am this morning (Saturday).

Several crews attended the scene and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using two hose reel jets and a covering jet.

The occupants, a family and at least two dogs, heard the smoke alarms and closed doors as they escaped the burning building – limiting the fire spread.

In a statement, DWFRS said: “Working smoke alarms alerted the occupier to make a safe and swift exit, whilst closing doors in the house limited the fire damage.

“Please, test your smoke alarms and ensure you and your loved ones have an escape route should the worst happen – it could save your lives.”
