Fake charity collector arrested for sexual assault after terrorising girls and women

A man has been arrested after police received numerous reports of women and teenage girls being approached and subjected to inappropriate behaviour and harassment.

Over the past few days Wiltshire Police has received various reports about a man speaking to women in the Parks area of Swindon, posing as a charity collector and saying he required clothing for a local women’s refuge.

This conversation quickly became inappropriate and caused alarm and distress for the women and girls involved. There was also one report of indecent exposure and sexual assault by touching a woman inappropriately.

A 40-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of harassment, indecent exposure, voyeurism and sexual assault and is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

Sergeant Richard Tottle, from the Central South Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This type of behaviour is wholly unacceptable and my team of PCs and PCSOs, with the help of colleagues from our Intelligence Unit, have worked hard to quickly identify and arrest a suspect.

“Everyone should feel that that can go about their business in this town without being harassed or made to feel threatened or uncomfortable.

“Our enquiries are still ongoing and we would ask anyone that has been approached by this man and subjected to similar inappropriate behaviour, to please call us.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting crime reference 54210094373.
