Elderly man seriously injured after being pushed to the floor by thief at Sainsbury’s

An elderly man’s suffered a serious head injury after being knocked the the floor during an incident at Sainsbury’s in Swindon.

At 4pm on Tuesday 13 March, a man entered the store and selected goods valued at just under £200. He then attempted to leave the store without making any effort to pay for the items.

He was challenged by staff near the front door and during this altercation the man pushed a passing member of the public who fell to the ground. The offender dropped the items and ran from the shop whilst staff and other members of the public gave first aid.

A 86-year-old local man, sustained a serious head injury which required hospital treatment.

The suspect is described as white, of medium build, approximately 5’10, with short brown hair – balding on the top. He was wearing a grey hooded jumper, dark blue jeans and dark coloured trainers.

PC Benjamin Peacock, who is investigating the incident, said: “Fortunately the victim is recovering at home but this was an unprovoked and serious assault on an elderly man.

“We are following a number of enquiries to locate the suspect but would also like to hear from anyone who was in the store at the time or who has information which may assist our investigation.”
